Quiz Night with Diccon Bewes and the BSCC in Zurich 13th December

Diccon Bewes, author of SwissWatching

How much do you know about Swiss or British trivia?  If you’ve been reading Diccon Bewes’ latest book “Swisscellany”, chances are you will know quite alot!  In any case, why not pit your wits against your friends, neighbours, fellow expats and come along on your own or sign up as a team of four to join in the fun.

Diccon is sure to be a highly entertaining Quiz Master.  If you have read his book Swiss Watching you will know what I mean – there are passages that have you laughing out loud.  Swiss Watching was featured as a Financial Times “best book” and was recently translated into German so that the Swiss can read about themselves in (one of) their own language (s) too!

The event is organised by the British Swiss Chamber of Commerce and takes place in Zurich on December 13th, starting at 6pm. If you would like to register,  please follow this link: Hurry though as tickets are selling fast!

Good luck and we look forward to seeing you at the Quiz Night on the 13th December in Zurich.

Samichlaus Swim in the Limmat in Zurich – brrr!!!!

Samichlaus Swimming in Zur

Despite the ridiculously cold temperatures, not to mention the snow falling in Zurich on Sunday, there was a long line of people of all ages qeueing up to take (almost) all their clothes off and jump in the river! What’s more they had had to pay for the privilege – as well as register in advance for this rather mad tradition known as “Samichlaus Schwimmen”.

Now in it’s 13th year, it usually takes place at the beginning of December and involves jumping into the Limmat at Pier 7 near Bellevue and swimming across to the other side ending up (hopefully) at the Frauenbadi, preferably wearing a Father Christmas hat or some other festive adornment.

The blue and sunny skies belied the cold temperatures – and the water temperature was between 4 and 7 degrees !!! However,  this did not deter just under 350 eager participants taking part this crisp December day.

Samichlaus Swimming in Zur

The groups were divided into small batches as they jumped into the Limmat every 4 minutes, accompanied by divers from Scuba Viva, the local scuba diving company based at Pier 7.  Around nine divers were on duty including Bruno (see photo below) and a boat ferried the swimmers’ luggage across to the Frauenbadi.  The police and a number of ‘watch men” were also on hand for safety.

Some swimmers, including Lisa (see photo wearing garland) were not quite cold enough and insisted on swimming across whilst eating ice lollies.  Thankfully though they warmed up with a glass of schnapps once they arrived at the other side (after finishing off their lollies).

If this has inspired you to try the “Samichlaus Swim” swim next year then don’t forget to register next year!

NewInZurich Guide to Christmas Markets Part 1 Switzerland

Christmas Market Zurich

There’s nothing quite like visiting a Christmas market with a cup of hot Gluhwein in your hand as you explore the goods and wares of the market holders, sample a few goodies and get some inspiration for Christmas presents and turn your sights to Christmas.

Zurich itself has three main Christmas markets –  one with the glittering 15m high Swarovski Christmas Tree, in Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station, another in Hirschenplatz in the Niederdorf, the old town, and yet one more in Bellevue, just near the Opera.  A little further along Lake Zurich is the Rapperswil Christmas Market. Each one has it’s own personality and specialities.

Here are the dates for the main Christmas Markets in Switzerland:

Zurich Hauptbahnhof November 22nd – December 24th

Zurich Niederdorf 7th – 23rd December

Zurich Bellevue 22nd November – 24th December

Rapperswil 14th – 23rd December (closed on 17th December)

Basel November 22nd to December 23rd

Baden December 8th and December 12th

Berne 1st – 24th December

Biel 6th – 24th December

Bremgarten – 6th – 9th December

Ensiedeln 1st to 9th December

Lucerne November 23rd to December 23rd

Montreux November 23rd to December 24th

Lausanne November 23rd to December 24th

Morges – 5th – 9th December

Winterthur – 4th – 23rd December

Later this week we will post Part II featuring Christmas Markets over the border in France, Germany and Austria.

This information was based on NewInZurich’s “Snowtime” talk for schools, companies, families and individuals.  If you are interested in knowing more about what is on in Zurich in the Winter please email newinzurich@gmail.com for more information.
