Today is an unofficial half day holiday in Zurich to celebrate Knabenschiessen – so if you’re lucky enough be off, do enjoy the sunny weather and have a lovely day. Some of the local shops and businesses will be closing early or have reduced hours – so don’t get caught out. As well as the shooting competition In Albisgüetli (No 13 tram takes you most of the way, then you walk the last 10 minutes) there are plenty of attractions, amusements, rides, food stalls and more. The Jungfrau Marathon has already started today and continues on Sunday. It is often referred to as the “toughest marathon in the world” and we wish one of our guest bloggers, Rachel Dale, who is running in aid of Room to Read, all the very best. Participants will be running at altitude through the most stunning scenery.

And if you fancy Swimming here is a website with information (in German) listing swimming pools all over Switzerland. And here is a list of the Badis in Zurich. Don’t forget it really might be the last chance for a swim as many of them start closing down from this Sunday onwards. The water temperature today is around 20 degrees – very inviting! Have a great weekend!
Don’t forget the day of fun, food and festivities at the Viadukt Market in Limmatrasse 231 in Zurich starting today and lasting until 2am tomorrow morning! Entrance is free and there is music, art, food, wine, a photo exhibition, a fashion show, tango dancing tasters and lots more. See you there!
On Saturday till Monday there is the Knabenschiesen shooting festival at Albisgüetli, with a Chilbi with rides and attractions. If you happen to be passing through Witikon on Saturday there is a “Dorf Markt”market taking place from 9am – 4pm with lots of stalls featuring diverse products and specialities.
The weekend weather forecast is for warm and sunny temperatures – so you may even fancy a dip in one of the Badis before they start closing for the season from next week onwards.
And if you’re looking for a trip further afield the Jungfrau Marathon is taking place on Saturday too.
- “Knabenschiessen” takes place next weekend at Albisgüetli from Saturday 8th till Monday 10th September. The custom dates back to the seventeenth century, when all boys were required to practice their shooting during the summer holidays and the final was held in September. It is no longer compulsory and since 1920, the Riflemen’s Association of Zurich has hosted this traditional shoot.
- Since 1991 it has also been open to girls too and in total there will be around 4,000 children aged 12 to 16 entering the contest. If you have a son or daughter in this age range, who would like to compete, they need to register here by 7th September
- As well as hosting the shooting, Albisgüetli becomes one great big “Chilbi” or amusement park, with stalls and booths, rides and attractions and lots of fun!
