Halloween in Zurich 2012 – are you ready?

Halloween will soon be upon us and whether you’re dressing up and planning a party or a dinner, going to town or just celebrating at home there are certainly plenty of pumpkins available for carving or cooking with.  Here are some of the many varieties of pumpkins and gourds available locally:

There is even a good selection at most road-side stalls outside Zurich like this one in Esslingen:

Of course, as we have mentioned before a great place to visit for variety and to admire their amazing annual pumpkin exhibition (the Olympics is the theme this year) is Jucker Farm in Seegraeben where they will be having a “Family Halloween” celebration on Sunday 28th October from 11am – 5pm.

According to the Mr Pickwick website, Halloween is a festival of Celtic origin held on All Hallows Eve, the night of October 31st. The last night of October was the eve of “Samhain”, the Celtic new year – so one place you can start celebrating early  is at the Oliver Twist pub in Zurich from 17th – 31st October. If you fancy something a little more scary you could try out a “Ghost Walk of Zurich” – if ever there was a time to try it out, this surely would be it?

If all else fails you could simply stay home and enjoy a bowl of Delia Smith’s roasted pumpkin soup with cheese (she even uses Swiss cheese in her recipe!). For details of how to make Delia’s soup click here. En guete!
