Spotlight Zumikon

Today we’re taking a look outside Zurich for a change and covering some interesting events taking place in 8126 Zumikon over the next couple of weeks.

On Monday 19th November there is a Vernissage at Florita, the florists in the Dorfplatz in Zumikon highlighting all the special Christmas decorations, wreaths, flower arrangements and more to help make your Christmas really special.  The “Adventvernissage” takes place in the shop itself from 4pm – 8pm.  Why not pop by for a spot of inspiration?

On Wednesday 21st November Andre Becchio is presenting an exhibition entitled “Objekte in Holz”, “Objects in Wood” at the Galerie Milchhuette in Zumikon from 6pm until 8pm and on Thursday 22nd there will be the “Finissage” of the exhibition from 6pm – 8pm. For more information.

On Saturday 24th there is a Christmas wine tasting event at the Triangel Restaurant in Zumikon from 11am to 4pm organised by Real Wines.  Admission is free.  Why not drop in to sample a glass or two?

On Saturday 24th November and Tuesday 27th November there are “Young Engineers” trial workshops taking place at Gymboree in Zumikon aimed at children aged 5 to 10 years old helping them explore engineering, physics and maths in a fun environment. For more information

ICS Christmas Market Zumikon

On Thursday 29th November there is the annual ICS Christmas Market taking place in the Gemeindesaal in Zumikon Dorfplatz from 11am till 6pm.  There will be a raffle, tombola, stalls selling jewellery, clothes, cookies, cakes and more.  Most of all there will be an amazing selection of presents for all the family.  Don’t miss this great event! Free entry and everyone welcome! All proceeds will be going to two charities: the the SMD School in Nepal which gives an education to children from villages in the Himalayas who would not otherwise receive one, and to Sozialwerke Pfarrer Sieben which works with the homeless and vulnerable in Zurich.

This Weekend in Zurich: Food + Wine + Cars + Fashion + Art + Festivals

Food: Slow Food Market in Oerlikon: From the 9th – 11th November there is the Slow Food Market at the Messe in Oerlikon.  A not-to-miss event for all foodies and gourmets! Fashion: Mercedes Benz Fashion Days: Mercedes Benz fashion show continues at Schiffbau on Saturday and on Sunday for it’s final night. For more information click here or to  read our previous article click here.

Art: Zurich Kunst 12: KUNST 12 ZÜRICH is a contemporary visual art fair showcasing 80 international galleries. Over the past 17 years this art fair has grown into an important meeting point for collectors, gallery owners, curators, artists and art-lovers. Art: Swiss National Museum Exhibition Exhibition “Capital” – the Merchants in Venice and Amsterdam The exhibition tells the story of the origins of our contemporary economic system, capitalism, in the historic maritime republic of Venice and during the “Golden Age” of Amsterdam – Venice from the 13th century and Amsterdam in the 17th century. Both cities played a key role in the economic and social development of the West. Merchants and traders invented new forms of finance, credit and commerce which we still use today. The Raeblilichtumzug in Richterswil: This takes place not far from Zurich in the town of Richterswil on Saturday 10th November starting from around 3pm.  There are special boats along the lake to get to get there in time and it all makes for a great spectacle as the whole town is lit up by “turnip lanterns”.For more information click here to read our previous post.

Halloween Week in Zurich – lots of events, some spooky, some not!

This coming week it’s Halloween!  You can start celebrating early at the Oliver Twist pub in Zurich from 17th – 31st October and on the 31st itself at the Fork and Bottle Restaurant where there will be a special Halloween party for children in the afternoon from 3.30pm and for adults in the evening from 7pm. Charity Event: On Thursday 1st there is a charity screening at 7pm of a film by photo journalist Mimi Chakarova raising awareness about sex trafficking from Eastern Europe to Western Europe. It will be held at  the Musiksaal at Schule Hirschengraben, Hirschengraben 46, Zurich. 6 Things to do in Zurich this Weekend!

Lots going on this weekend in and around Zurich and it looks like it will be a good one whether it snows or not. A few things to keep you busy:

1. Open Day (Tag der Offenen Tur) at Zurich Kunsthaus – the gallery is open to everyone for free and lots of special activities including music, tours, competitions etc will be laid on to entertain you and please scroll down to our previous post on this topic for more information. 2. Continuing with the “art theme” there is also the exhibition of young Swiss artists in Winterthur jungkunst.ch which looks like a great occasion to view aspiring Swiss artists in a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy, music, shopping and food and drink. Love this picture by Alain Poussot:

3. Jelmoli Style Days continue with a Family Day in the children’s department with special offers, family photo shoots, a special family breakfast in the newly opened Sopra restaurant and 10% discount on many items across the whole store.

4. On Saturday evening there will be an “apocalyptic evening of fun and food” with a reading in English by Justin Cronin, author of “The Twelve” at Orell Fuessli bookstore at 8:00 p.m. Entrance free. 6. And if you’re feeling thirsty why not taste some wine at the Coop Weinmesse at the Schuetzenhaus in Albisguetli.  It’s closed on Sunday but it is open on Saturday 27th from 2pm – 10pm. 12 boats,15 days, 4,000 vineyards – Expovina 2012 Wine Boats at Burkliplatz

Mark your diaries for the 59th annual Expovina Wine tasting event which will be held in Zurich from 1st – 15th November. This unique wine tasting event takes aboard the 12 (stationary!) wine ships which will be lined up at Burkliplatz laden with wine from vineyards all over the world for you to explore and to enjoy.

For just 20 CHF entry you can taste the wines from over 4,000 vineyards from all over the world and there are also restaurants aboard the ships which makes it an ideal place to meet up with friends.

The opening times are as follows:

Monday – Saturday                                          1pm – 10pm (last entrance 9pm)

Sunday                                                             1pm – 7pm (last entrance 6pm)

Thursday 15th November(last day)                  1pm – 9pm (last entrance 9pm)

The restaurants are open from 11.30 till midnight from Monday to Saturday and from 11.30 till 9pm on Sunday. You can enter the ships free of charge between 11.30 and 12.30 to visit the restaurants. For more information please click here.

Last Day at the Gourmesse fine food and wine Fair


Monday 8th is the last day at the “Gourmesse” fair at Burkliplatz.  If you haven’t visited and you’re passionate about good food and wine make sure you don’t miss out.  You can taste hams, cheeses (see below photo of Willi Schmid who makes award-winning cheese from Jersey milk) as well as wines, beers and champagne. Chef Rene Widmer demonstrates “cuisine sous vide” and there are demonstrations galore.

Gourmesse is also a place to find hard to source ingredients, gift items, kitchen accessories, gadgets and a show kitchen where top chefs cook up amazing dishes.The fair is open Monday 8th October from 11am till 8pm. Here’s a quick round up of things on in and around Zurich this weekend:

On Sunday 7th there is the Alpabfahrt in Elm at 2.30pm.  For more information click here.

Circus Monti is on until Sunday 7th October with trapeze artists, clowns and acrobats from all over the world. The circus takes place in a big top located at Kasernenareal in Zurich and for more information and to book tickets click here.

The Gourmesse.ch – fine food and wine from all over Switzerland in Zurich is on at the Kongresshaus todayfrom 11am to 9pm and on Sunday 7th and Monday 8th from 11am – 8pm.  As well as food, wine and champagne tastings, there are also show kitchens with top chefs demonstrating their skills and there are restaurants there too.

The Zurich Bierfest is on at Zurich Hauptbahnof until Saturday 13th October with plenty of beer a fun atmosphere.  It’s advisable to make reservations if you can but there are sometimes seats availble if you’re passing by.  For more information and to make a booking click here.

Gourmesse.ch – fine food and wine from all over Switzerland in Zurich 5th – 8th October

Do you like fine food and wine? Enjoy cooking? Fancy tasting some delicious gourmet food and drink from Switzerland and beyond? If so, make your way over to the Fine Foood Fair Gourmesse.ch which will be held this Friday 5th October until Monday 8th October at the Kongresshaus near Burkliplatz in Zurich. With over 150 exhibitors the 18th Gourmesse.ch exhibition is bound to offer something for everyone.

As well as fine foods and delicacies such as cheeses, coffee, bread, chocolate and meats from all over the country, and from Italy and Sicily too, there will be show kitchens featuring chefs such as Michelin starred chef Antonio Alampi and his team, Tobias Funke and Mauro Gianinazzi from Funkes Obstgarten and Pacal Haag and Tobias Hosli from Restaurant Hiltl to name just a  few. There will be opportunities for tastings, master classes and seminars on all things “foodie”.  There will also be great selections of wines, beers and champagne to tempt your palate.

And why not bring your children along? Children under 12 are free and there are complimentary childcare facilities for them where they will be entertained with food themed projects of their own. There are also reduced entry prices for 13-16 year olds and as well as for pensioners.

Clothes, Music, Circus, Food … in Zurich this week

A few things going on this week that you might be interested in:

There is a sale of “Trendies” and “Maysense” clothing for both children and women taking place at Zollikon Gemindesaal today and on Thursday 4th October from 9.30 – 18.00. Do take a look and see if you can snap up some bargains.

This Saturday 6th October an Indie rock band from the UK called the Skinny Machines is playing at the Big Ben pub near Hardbrucke in the evening from around 8pm onwards.  Entrance is free and if you want to find out more about them please click here.

Grape Picking in Stein am Rhein anyone?
