Snow and Sunsets in and Around Zurich

Well we’ve had lots of snow in and around Zurich this past couple of weeks but right now it’s starting to disappear and the forecast for the coming week is a mixture of cloud, rain, sunshine and snow showers – but who knows! The city looked pretty last week covered in a white blanket – though some of the bikes and bike seats have been looking decidedly chilly! Definitely the weather to find a cosy cafe and order a hot chocolate to warm yourself up!

Outside the Viadukt there were lots of bikes lined up in rows in the snow but this poor bike looked in rather a sorry state, abandoned in the snow.

Snowy bike in ZurichStadelhofen looked very pristine and white though they’ve turned off the fountain so we’re missing out on the cool ice sculptures we used to get when the water froze artistically over the statues.

Overlooking the lake around Meilen and Kusnacht there were some beautiful sunsets with gorgeous reflections which made the snow turn pink.

And as the sun set it almost looked as if this tree was aglow.

And up on the slopes in Davos today it was sunny and clear.

After a dull, rainy day in Zurich on Friday the forecast is for a little sunshine this weekend – so perhaps a chance to go for a hike, stroll round town, get to the shops and check out the sales?  If you want to know the shopping hours do take a look at our NewInZurich Christmas / New Year Shopping Guide to check the dates as there are special opening times around the New Year’s holiday. Or why not head for the ski slopes and get some skiing in? Or perhaps you fancy going to see a circus or a show? There are still a few tickets left for Salto Natale before it ends its run on 2nd January and also for Swiss Christmas in Oerlikon. We have some more details about the shows in a previous post which you might like to read.

October Snow in Zurich and Surrounding areas

Snow in Zurich and around, October 2012, Zurich Snow ©NewInZurich

Well the snow certainly didn’t stop on Sunday so today, Monday, was a veritable Winter Wonderland in and around Zurich.  Not only did it serve as a reminder to get your car booked in for the Winter tyre change (if you haven’t already) but as the sun shone and the children built snowmen it really felt like December – not October!

In Zurich the sun melted the snow but even by early evening it still clung to the rooftops. With no more snow forecast for the immediate future, perhaps this is just a taste of a good Winter ahead?

Warm up those Autumn Evenings at Frau Gerold’s Garden

Autumn is upon us so why not try some “hearty fare” and warm up in Frau Gerold’s tent … mulled wine, raclette, soup, oysters, game, chestnut desserts and more.  A variety of  3-course menus (Sfr. 68) are on offer all served up inside the tent. Are you tempted?
From Tuesday October 9 to Saturday 27 October (Tue-Sat) Frau Gerold’s kitchen is open at Geroldstrasse 23/23a, 8005 Zurich. Reservations are recommended on 078 971 67 64 (from 11 h – 22 h). En guete!

Lake Zurich in the sunshine

After a cloudy start, Sunday turned in to a very sunny day – perfect for a barbeque, picnic and a swim.  The swans appeared to be enjoying the lake as much as everyone else and there were some dramatic jumps from the diving board.

It was rounded off with a beautiful September sunset. Hope you all had a great day.

Fine Weekend in Zurich? Burkliplatz Flea Market, International Parenting Fair, Lernfestival…

Photo: NewInZurich

The forecast predicted fine weather this weekend in Zurich.  Though whether it will be as sunny as last week and if the water in the lake is warm enough for swimming is another question. The photo above was taken last Saturday in Zurich and the lake was definitely “refreshing” then – before last week’s rain arrived!

There is an International Community and Parenting Fair taking place on Saturday from 10 – 5pm in Kilchberg at the Kirchegemeindehaus Kilchberg, Stockenstrasse 150, 8802 Kilchberg on Saturday 14th.  This also coincides with the Lernfestival 2012 – a national campaign for lifelong learning which started on Friday. If you like writing there is the English version of an “endless story” to which you can contribute if you click here and which is part of this event.

Or you could pop down to Bürkliplatz and take a look at the flea market there. It’s open from 9am till 4pm on Saturdays from May – October with up to 500 stall holders and an ever changing array of goods for sale. Always worth a peek!

And if you fancy getting out of the city and watching one of the the Alpabzug festivals taking place this weekend, with the cows coming down the mountain, please check out our previous post for more details.

The Jungfrau Marathon has already started today and continues on Sunday. It is often referred to as the “toughest marathon in the world” and we wish one of our guest bloggers,  Rachel Dale, who is running in aid of Room to Read, all the very best. Participants will be running at altitude through the most stunning scenery.

And if you fancy Swimming here is a website with information (in German) listing swimming pools all over Switzerland. And here is a list of the Badis in Zurich. Don’t forget it really might be the last chance for a swim as many of them start closing down from this Sunday onwards. The water temperature today is around 20 degrees – very inviting! Have a great weekend!
