Art on Ice 2013 – Leona Lewis, 2Cellos (video) and Breathtaking Ice Skating

Leona Lewis, Art On Ice 2013

Leona Lewis

The premiere of Art on Ice 2013 opened on Thursday night in Zurich at the Hallenstadion in Oerlikon and the show was truly captivating. The headline act was Leona Lewis who was singing her greatest hits as the ice figure skaters danced and performed on the ice rink in front of the stage.

Art On Ice 2013

Having never been before I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect but I was enthralled by the beauty, skill and talent of the ice figure skaters.  It’s not surprising that the performances were so good, as the performers at Art On Ice all belong to the top echelons of the skating world and between them share a raft of World Championship and European medals.

Florent Amodio performed impressive gravity defying moves on the ice.

The elegance and grace as the skaters waltzed across the ice to differing music from Leona Lewis, Seven, the 2Cellos year (who last year accompanied Elton John on his tour) was amazing and gave the performances variety and made them simply stunning to observe. Stephane Lambiel not only gave an amazing skating performance but also sang with Larissa Evans a special number entitled “Live Your Fantasy”.

Sarah Meier looked totally at home at Art On Ice, having been a regular performer here for a number of years.

The Singer Seven (Jan Dettwyler) performed opening songs together with Mummenchanz, the mime group or “magicians of silence” who perform on stage as two giant hands.

Later at the “after party” the performances continued, though this time the ice skating champions took a back seat and enjoyed a well deserved rest as some of the singers including Seven and the Two Cellos gave energetic and lively performances till the early hours.

Having played on stage, the 2Cellos, Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser went on to entertain a very enthusiastic audience at the After Show Party with their energetic interpretation of popular chart songs with their cellos.   Here is a video of the 2Cellos performing at the After Party and them performing a snippet of an AC DC number.

The two founders of Art on Ice in Zurich, Reto Caviezel and Oliver Hoerner and the Head of Marketing, Marc Lindegger, should take pride in an amazing show and the fact that Art on Ice Zurich is now sold out.  If you plan on going next year you can already reserve tickets for Art On Ice Zurich 2014.

Atzmännig – Bijou Ski Resort just outside Zurich

Skiing in Atzmännig Ski resort

This weekend we visited Atzmännig ski resort for the first time. Having lived in Zurich some time now, and skied widely across the Graubunden resorts, as well as in Hoch Ybrig, Flumserberg and in the French part of Switzerland, I can’t believe it’s taken so long to discover this bijou little resort right on our doorstep!

 Atzmännig ski resort

And what a pleasant surprise. From the centre of Zurich, Atzmännig takes under an hour to get to and if you’re coming from Kuesnacht way you can be there in little more than 30 minutes. It’s ideal if you find you’re free for just a morning or afternoon, or if you fancy nothing too challenging, or if other slopes feel like just too long a drive. And it’s great for kids! It also offers free parking and over 1,000 car park spaces.

Atzmännig ski resort

This Saturday was a great day to go and the conditions were fantastic – fresh snow glinted in the sunshine against a backdrop of clear blue skies.  If you don’t fancy hurtling down the slopes at Atzmännig, there are some lovely restaurants you can visit or some great walks you can take around the resort either with or without snow shoes. There are two well marked out “snow shoe trails” and if you don’t have any, snow shoes can be rented on site. See the snow shoe trails here.

Atzmaennig Ski resort near Zurich

Atzmännig is a small resort but it is ideal for families and beginners. It clearly doesn’t offer the breadth and divertity of for example, a resort like Flims, but it has a charm all of it’s own. With various tickets available at a variety of prices including an inexpensive “Punkte Card” which would be ideal if you were only going to do a few runs, it is very accessible in more ways than one. It also has a ski school, a slalom course and offers night skiing and fondue parties – lots of Winter fun for the whole family.

In fact Roger also won this prize back in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. Well done too to Nicola Spirig, the triathlete, and Gold Medal winner in this year’s Olympics, who won the female best Swiss Athlete of the 2012, with 53 % of the votes.  The awards were presented at a ceremony which took place on Sunday night in Zurich.

Photos from Silvesterlauf Zurich 2012

Sunday’s Silvesterlauf was a successful event in Zurich with crowds thronging the streets as people paraded around in all sorts of costumes, from traditional lycra sports attire to various forms of fancy dress, ranging from angels, to devils to Father Christmases, to red hot chilli peppers and everything in-between.  There was even someone running through the city dressed as a box!

Parts of the city were closed to traffic to accommodate the run which is called the Silvesterlauf (actually meaning New Year’s run) but for some strange reason it always takes place in the middle of December.

A fun event, maybe you’ll want to take part next year?

Sunday in Zurich – Silvesterlauf and Shopping Outside the City

Zurich in black and white

Have a wonderful Sunday in Zurich.

If you’re running in the Silvesterlauf good luck!

And if you’ve still got Christmas presents to buy you may feel that you’re running out of time – but fear not, although Zurich itself is shut (due to the Silvesterlauf) the following Shopping Centres near Zurich are open on Sunday 16th:

1) Glattzentrum from 10am – 6pm

2) Volkiland from 11am – 6pm

Check here for more information on Sunday Shopping in and around Zurich.

Great weekend ahead in Zurich! Silvesterlauf, Skating, Singing Christmas tree and more…

This weekend as usual you will be spoilt for choice in Zurich as there is so much to do!

On Saturday you could check out one of the Christmas Markets in Zurich, go and watch the children singing at the Singing Christmas tree and then, if you’re brave enough, why try some do some ice skating at the Dolderbahn, at Live on Ice in Kusnacht or take the children skating at the ice skating rink at Glattzentrum whilst you’re shopping. And of course that way you could also get some Christmas Shopping done!

On Sunday, there is Sunday Christmas Shopping in Glattzentrum and Volkiland too (but NOT in Zurich!) and it is also the day of Zurich’s annual Silvesterlauf! If you haven’t managed to sign up for it, no sweat – simply relax, grab a Gluhwein (for medicinal purposes of course!) and cheer and watch as your friends go by on this annual run through the city of Zurich.

The week ahead offers the very pretty and quaint tradition of “Lichterschwimmen” on December 20th from 5pm as hundreds of candles are lit and released onto the river Limmat and then float gently downstream. It all happens just off Weinplatz – so a great place to watch and grab (yet another!) Gluhwein! Do wrap up warmly though as it can get very cold!!!

There is also a Faye Dunaway retrospective at the Xenix Cinema and then then there is the Paul Taylor Orchestra in Zurich and Zumikon. If you fancy a show do check out Swiss Christmas, Conelli Circus and Salto Natale. For Christmas Carols this weekend at 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday visit St Andrews Church in Zurich. And if you’re lucky enough to get to the slopes and do some skiing or snowboarding – enjoy and have fun!

Samichlaus Swim in the Limmat in Zurich – brrr!!!!

Samichlaus Swimming in Zur

Despite the ridiculously cold temperatures, not to mention the snow falling in Zurich on Sunday, there was a long line of people of all ages qeueing up to take (almost) all their clothes off and jump in the river! What’s more they had had to pay for the privilege – as well as register in advance for this rather mad tradition known as “Samichlaus Schwimmen”.

Now in it’s 13th year, it usually takes place at the beginning of December and involves jumping into the Limmat at Pier 7 near Bellevue and swimming across to the other side ending up (hopefully) at the Frauenbadi, preferably wearing a Father Christmas hat or some other festive adornment.

Samichlaus Swim in Zurich

The blue and sunny skies belied the cold temperatures – and the water temperature was between 4 and 7 degrees !!! However,  this did not deter just under 350 eager participants taking part this crisp December day.

Samichlaus Swimming in Zur

The groups were divided into small batches as they jumped into the Limmat every 4 minutes, accompanied by divers from Scuba Viva, the local scuba diving company based at Pier 7.  Around nine divers were on duty including Bruno (see photo below) and a boat ferried the swimmers’ luggage across to the Frauenbadi.  The police and a number of ‘watch men” were also on hand for safety.

Samichlaus Schwimmen Zurich

Some swimmers, including Lisa (see photo wearing garland) were not quite cold enough and insisted on swimming across whilst eating ice lollies.  Thankfully though they warmed up with a glass of schnapps once they arrived at the other side (after finishing off their lollies).

If this has inspired you to try the “Samichlaus Swim” swim next year then don’t forget to register next year!

Glacier Skiing and Ski and Snowboard Testing in Saas Fee

Ski and Snowboard Testing in Saas Fee

Hopefully the ski resorts around Zurich will be full of snow soon.  But if you can’t wait until December when the resorts typically open up, why not try glacier skiing in Saas Fee?

During the months of October and November they run their “Swiss ski tests” where you can test out skis and snowboards for the coming season in the Allalin snow sports area.  In addition to the ski pistes, you can also use the Kingdom Snow Park, equipped with a half-pipe, large and small lines of kickers and various rails.

There are a number of special offers running at the local hotels with hotel accommodation, lift pass and special ski and snowboard testing all included –  for more information click here. The ski or snowboard testing alone costs just CHF 55 for two days, allowing you to test out any new model of your choice from a good selection. A  great idea to try out different models if you’re thinking of changing skis or snowboards too.
