Following his Swiss premiere in November 2012 which was completley sold out, tenor John Thade is now back in Zurich for two concerts. The first takes place on the 9th February and the second on 9th March 2013 at the Jecklin Forum in Rämistrasse 30, 8001 Zurich. Both concerts start at 4pm , with the doors opening at 3.30pm. The musical repertoire of this American born singer who grew up in St.Gallen but now lives in Zurich, ranges from Viennese operettas to classic Broadway songs and he projects a great on stage presence as he intermixes his music with entertaining anecdotes. For more information please go to the John Thade website or the Jecklin website.

If this isn’t your cup of tea and you’re looking for something quirky and different why not pop along to the Migros Museum in Zurich and check out a “VideoInstallation” exhibition by the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson called “The Visitors”?

Ragnar Kjartansson The Visitors
Set in a mansion in upstate Manhattan it depicts the artist, his friends, and residents performing a “feminine nihilistic gospel song” with various musical instruments being played in different rooms. “The Visitors” is an act of homage to friendship—and also, to the Swedish pop band ABBA. If you’re interested you need to be quick as it finishes on Sunday 27th January. For more information go to the website.

Great weekend ahead in Zurich! Silvesterlauf, Skating, Singing Christmas tree and more…

This weekend as usual you will be spoilt for choice in Zurich as there is so much to do!

On Saturday you could check out one of the Christmas Markets in Zurich, go and watch the children singing at the Singing Christmas tree and then, if you’re brave enough, why try some do some ice skating at the Dolderbahn, at Live on Ice in Kusnacht or take the children skating at the ice skating rink at Glattzentrum whilst you’re shopping. And of course that way you could also get some Christmas Shopping done!

On Sunday, there is Sunday Christmas Shopping in Glattzentrum and Volkiland too (but NOT in Zurich!) and it is also the day of Zurich’s annual Silvesterlauf! If you haven’t managed to sign up for it, no sweat – simply relax, grab a Gluhwein (for medicinal purposes of course!) and cheer and watch as your friends go by on this annual run through the city of Zurich.

The week ahead offers the very pretty and quaint tradition of “Lichterschwimmen” on December 20th from 5pm as hundreds of candles are lit and released onto the river Limmat and then float gently downstream. It all happens just off Weinplatz – so a great place to watch and grab (yet another!) Gluhwein! Do wrap up warmly though as it can get very cold!!!

There is also a Faye Dunaway retrospective at the Xenix Cinema and then then there is the Paul Taylor Orchestra in Zurich and Zumikon. If you fancy a show do check out Swiss Christmas, Conelli Circus and Salto Natale. For Christmas Carols this weekend at 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday visit St Andrews Church in Zurich. And if you’re lucky enough to get to the slopes and do some skiing or snowboarding – enjoy and have fun!

The Zurich Opera House Open Day in pictures

Did you visit Zurich Opera House’s Open Day last Saturday? If you did you had the opportunity not only to see special performances and taster sessions, but also to listen to chamber music in the “Room of Mirrors” to check out the views from different seats in the theatre, to look behind the scenes and watch demonstration of “fake snow” and “fake fires” taking place on stage as well as disappearing doors and other theatrical devices.

One of the best areas was the Wardrobe section where you had access to period costumes and with the help of very competent “wardrobe mistresses” you could actually choose a costume to try on, along with co-ordinating hats, brollies and even tiaras.

The Opera House is home to opera, ballet, concerts and lots more. It is located centrally in Zurich with views right over the lake and is close to Stadelhofen railway station and is well connected for trams.

Fancy watching Salome, Tosca or Jenufa – all of which will be performing soon? To check out the current Opera Programme click here. Romeo and Juliet as well as Swan Lake ballets will be performing soon as well and for the full Ballet Programme click here. The programme for the Philharmonic Concerts is available here.
