What a Weekend in Zurich!

So much to do in and around Zurich this weekend!

Here is a quick round up of things going on this Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd September:

There is of course the Zurich Film Festival

Then there is the Opera House Open Day

The Freestyle.ch event at Landiwiese  – watch this video from last year to get a feel!

The Zuspa Shopping Fair in Oerlikon

The Procession of Cows down the mountain a little further afield in Flums

You can also get involved in Zurich Multi Mobile and even hire a video bike helmet and

make your own movie.

On Sunday there is the Slow Up from Meilen to Rapperswil and on to Schmerikon and if you cycle both directions you will have covered 56 km!

If the weather is off putting there is also the Local International Party at Holmes Place Jelmoli from 2pm – midnight. CHF 20 entry which includes 2 drinks and canapés .

Lots to do and let’s hope you can fit at least some of it  in. Certainly not a weekend to get bored!

Zurich Opera House’s Open Day Sat 22nd September – free entry for all

Have you visited the Opera House in Zurich? If not, this Saturday you have the opportunity to explore both the public areas and “behind the scenes” as the Opernhaus invites you all to an “open Day”.

From 1O.OO-21.OO the Opera House is yours to explore. There will be special events (with tickets available at the front of the building) and the whole day will be a celebration of the start of the season 2O12/13 –  one great big Opera House Party! There will be food, music and theatre for you all to enjoy and an opportunity to get to know Zurich Opera House at close quarters. What’s even better is that entrance is free!  Enjoy!

Zurich Multimobil 2012 – Zurich goes green

You’ve probably seen the posters plastered all over Zurich this week – but what exactly is  “Zurich Multimobil”? It’s a series of over 70 activities taking place in Zurich from the 19th – 23rd September to show how mobile you can be in Zurich without needing a car.

The city of Zurich is highlighing these days of action as part of its contribution to “European Mobility Week” and to address the following questions:
Can you live in Zurich without a car?
What happens when there is no more oil?
How fast and easy is an E-bike to use?
All sorts of ideas and suggestions are on hand to look at ways of making Zurich more enviromentally friendly and Multimobil hopes to make you think about the part you can play. There are free bike tours with music and entertainment as well as free bike hire with Zuri Rollt, information about e-bikes and help for pedestrians an commuters alike. And please note that the centre of Zurich will be closed to cars all day Saturday 23rd September. For more information please click here. Don’t miss the “Slow Up” from Meilen next Sunday 23rd September

Don’t miss the “Slow Up” next Sunday 23rd September around Lake Zurich from Meilen to Rapperswil and then on to Schmerikon.  It’s 28 km in total and you can do as much or as little of it as you like, by biking, skating, pushing a pram….. It’s mainly flat and there are refreshment booths and snack stops all along the route. The road along the lake from Meilen is shut to cars and all road traffic from 9am till 6pm – and the road is yours from 10am – 5pm!

Weltmarkt in Oerlikon this Friday 14th September

Fancy a market with a difference? Why not visit the “Weltmarkt” which is taking place on the Marktplatz in Oerlikon this coming Friday 14th September?  It’s open from 11am till 8pm and promises a vast array of exotic food, spices, clothes, craft, pottery, jewellery, music and more from all over the world.

Guided Tour of Zürich-West & Expat Career Fair in Lausanne

Today 11th September there will be a guided tour of the developing and up and coming area around West Zürich. The tour is conducted in German by employees of Stadt Zurich and is free of charge and starts at 5.30pm – 7.30pm.

The former industrial area that surrounds Zürich-West and the Escher-Wyss-Platz and Hardturm neighbourhood is changing faster than any other area of Zürich as new buildings sprout up and fesh new open spaces are created.

Wine Tasting – Think Global, Drink Local

Hope you’re all enjoying the fabulous sunshine in Zurich this weekend. If you’ve overdone the sun and want to escape the heat later on, there is a Wine Tasting Event at Restaurant Loewen in Meilen today from 1pm 6pm.  Ahead of the Expovino Wine Tasting in Burkliplatz  on 1st – 15th November (more to follow closer to the time), why not pop by and try some local specialities from the vineyards along Lake Zurichsee? Think global and drink local as they say! Entry is CHF 10 per person (or free if you click here and print out).  Prost!

Don’t forget the day of fun, food and festivities at the Viadukt Market in Limmatrasse 231 in Zurich starting today and lasting until 2am tomorrow morning! Entrance is free and there is music, art, food, wine, a photo exhibition, a fashion show, tango dancing tasters and lots more. See you there!

On Saturday till Monday there is the Knabenschiesen shooting festival at Albisgüetli, with a Chilbi with rides and attractions. If you happen to be passing through Witikon on Saturday there is a “Dorf Markt”market taking place from 9am – 4pm with lots of stalls featuring diverse products and specialities.

The weekend weather forecast is for warm and sunny temperatures – so you may even fancy a dip in one of the Badis before they start closing for the season from next week onwards.

And if you’re looking for a trip further afield the Jungfrau Marathon is taking place on Saturday too.

Viadukt Event Friday 7th September Food, Music, Entertainment and more

If you haven’t yet visited the Viadukt in Kreis 5 in West Zurich, then Friday 7th September would be a great time to go!  They are having a special day and night of events and entertainment when they will stay open late till 2am. 64 shops, restaurants, and bars will be opening their doors on the day. There will be amazing food from all the delicatessens – local and international culinary delights for gourmets and gourmands of all ages. From sushi to Swiss specialties like bratwurst and raclette, to a Fontaine d’Absinthe – there will be lots of variety!  There will be music from the Flying Carrots, Ben Johnson and Ruedi Burkhardt and more, a photo exhibition, book reading, dancing under the stars in the form of tango taster sessions, a big fashion workshop and plenty to keep you busy.
