The Week Ahead in Zurich

It’s a busy week ahead for many people with Thanksgiving next Thursday and before you know it, it will be full steam ahead towards Christmas.  Here are a few ideas for the next couple of weeks in and around Zurich:

The Schoggi Tram Saturday 17th November

Schoggi tram Zurich, Chocolae Tram Zurich, Confiserie Honold

No need for translation here – the Schoggi Tram is the “Chocolate Tram” which has been doing a special run this week in Zurich. Sadly, Saturday 17th is the last day when the chocolate tram from Confiserie Honold wends its way through the city.

For just CHF 5 you get a hot chocolate, a piece of Almond Cake and a praline! You can buy your ticket at Bellevue stop or at Rennweg as you alight (no pre-booking). The chocolate tram runs from Bellevue at 13:30 / 14:00 / 14:30 / 15:00 / 15:30 / 16:00  (and in the other direction 15 minutes later) limited capacity. Enjoy!

The First International Arabic Film Festival in Zurich 16th – 25th November

International Arabic Film Festival Zurich

After the Zurich International Film Festival in October, now for the first time, Zurich plays host to the International Arabic Film Festival. The festival is running for 10 days from the 16th November till the 25th November. The films are running at the Filmpodium. For more information, the programme and to buy tickets.

Now is the time of year that all the circuses come to town:

Salto Natale Circus is in Zurich from 21st November to 2nd January. The venue is at  Zurich Kloten. For further information.

Conelli Circus is in the centre of town at Bauschänzli from 22nd November to 6th January  For further information. 

The Singing Christmas Tree in Werdmühleplatz just off Bahnhofstrasse is an institution in Zurich and if you haven’t seen it before then don’t miss it this year.  Christmas carols are sung by children all lined up in the formation of a Christmas Tree.  Why not go along and watch with a warming glass of Gluhwein! Blickgang Exhibition 23rd, 24th and 25th November

Blickfang Zurich 2012

Blickfang is the International design exhibition for fashion, interiors and jewellery and the good news is that it is coming to the Kongresshaus in Zurich on the 23rd – 25th November.  If you have never visited it before, then now is your opportunity! There is plenty of innovation, inspiration and plenty of things to look at and buy.  There is even day care provided for children from 12 noon and 6pm – so the kids can come too! Tickets are CHF 23. Opening hours are:

This Weekend in Zurich: Food + Wine + Cars + Fashion + Art + Festivals

Food: Slow Food Market in Oerlikon: From the 9th – 11th November there is the Slow Food Market at the Messe in Oerlikon.  A not-to-miss event for all foodies and gourmets! Fashion: Mercedes Benz Fashion Days: Mercedes Benz fashion show continues at Schiffbau on Saturday and on Sunday for it’s final night. For more information click here or to  read our previous article click here.

Art: Zurich Kunst 12: KUNST 12 ZÜRICH is a contemporary visual art fair showcasing 80 international galleries. Over the past 17 years this art fair has grown into an important meeting point for collectors, gallery owners, curators, artists and art-lovers. Art: Swiss National Museum Exhibition Exhibition “Capital” – the Merchants in Venice and Amsterdam The exhibition tells the story of the origins of our contemporary economic system, capitalism, in the historic maritime republic of Venice and during the “Golden Age” of Amsterdam – Venice from the 13th century and Amsterdam in the 17th century. Both cities played a key role in the economic and social development of the West. Merchants and traders invented new forms of finance, credit and commerce which we still use today. The Raeblilichtumzug in Richterswil: This takes place not far from Zurich in the town of Richterswil on Saturday 10th November starting from around 3pm.  There are special boats along the lake to get to get there in time and it all makes for a great spectacle as the whole town is lit up by “turnip lanterns”.For more information click here to read our previous post.

Year after year, more than 10’000 film addicts flock to the Casinotheater and Theater Winterthur. Halloween Week in Zurich – lots of events, some spooky, some not!

Charity Event: On Thursday 1st there is a charity screening at 7pm of a film by photo journalist Mimi Chakarova raising awareness about sex trafficking from Eastern Europe to Western Europe. Films in English at the Filmstelle from 2nd October – 11th December 2012

If you didn’t see your share of films at the Zurich Film Festival, or if indeed the Festival has whet your appetite for more, then from Tuesday 2nd October till the 11th December you have the chance to see a special showing of films in English at Filmstelle. Films showing as part of this event include Harold and Maude, Precious, Barfly and Dead Man.

The Filmstelle team is made up of about 20 cine fans from the ETH and the University of Zurich. For more information and for details of the programme click here.

Zurich Film Festival Awards 2012 – Tom Tykwer, Heather Graham and more…

On Saturday night the Opera House was looking rather splendid as it was illuminated by coloured lights ready for the 8th Zurich Film Festival Awards ceremony. The green carpet was in place and the Zurich Film Festival directors Nadja Schildknecht, beautifully attired in an oyster full length dress, together with a very elegant Karl Spoerri, prepared to meet and greet the esteemed guests.

The four juries of the competition categories presented their awards to Great Britain, the USA and to Germany and Austria. The main award went to the British film BROKEN by Rufus Norris for the Internaltional Feature Film Award, and the other awards to THE IMPOSTER by Bart Layton (USA) for International Documentary Film, to AM HIMMEL DER TAG by Pola Beck (Germany) for German Language Feature Film and to DER PROZESS by Gerald Igor Hauzenberger (Austria) for German language Documentary Film.

The Critics’ Award went to EL ULTIMO ELVIS by Armando Bo from Argentina and Christian Labhart’s Swiss documentary film APPASSIONATA won the Audience Award. Four out of the six winning films were debut works.

There were lots of glitzy frocks and dazzling smiles along the green carpet as the actors, judges, directors and Zurich’s glitterati made their way into the Opera House where the Awards Ceremony was taking place.

This year there were 7,000 more visitors to the Film Festival than last year with an attendance in total of over 58,000 visitors.

This year three new awards were introduced – a Golden Eye award for the best International film composer, one for actress Helen Hunt and a Lifetime Achievement award for American actor, John Travolta.

Zurich Weekend – Bierfest, Alpabzug, Zuspa, Zurich Film Festival, Pink Ribbon Charity Walk, Rowing

Why not raise a glass and celebrate Oktoberfest Zurich style?  The Zurich Bierfest is on at Zurich Hauptbahnof until Saturday 13th October and normally proves to be a very popular event with plenty of beer, lots of live music and entertainment and a fun atmosphere.  It’s advisable to make reservations if you can but there are normally some seats availble if you’re passing by.  For more information and to make a booking click here.

The Zurich Film Festival continues and on Saturday evening the Awards Ceremony take place. Sunday is the last day and for information on the programme of events click here.

There is also an Alpabzug taking place on Saturday Engelberg from 10 – 12 at Viktoriagärtli and there will be a market there from 10 till 5pm..  For more information scroll down to see the previous posts or click here.

In Zurich between Rathaus and Quaibrucke there is a World Rowing Race taking place between 1pm and 5pm.  For more information click here.

Zuepsa also runs for two more days, finishing on Sunday so if you’ve still got more shopping or food and wine tasting you want to investigate do head on down there. For more info click here.

On Sunday the 5th annual Pink Ribbon Charity walk takes plan  at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich from 12 noon to 5pm. If you haven’t done so already you can register on the day at 12 noon.

Seen Helen Hunt at the Zurich Film Festival? Will you catch Richard Gere in Zurich today?

Did you see Helen Hunt in Zurich on Friday? Helen Hunt was the first female recipient of the “Golden Eye” Award at this year’s Zurich Film Festival on Friday before the Festival’s screening of her new film “The Sessions” at the film’s European premiere.

Today, Richard Gere will be receiving the Golden Eye this evening prior to the screening of his latest work ARBITRAGE. Susan Sarandon will be doing the laudation and there will be the opportunity for Autographs and photos at the Green Carpet this evening.

The Zürich Film Festival continues until the 30th September with the chance to view 70 new film premières many of which are also attended by well-known actors and directors. In addition there are lots of supporting events inviting you to discuss the films you have seen.

make your own movie.

On Sunday there is the Slow Up from Meilen to Rapperswil and on to Schmerikon and if you cycle both directions you will have covered 56 km!

If the weather is off putting there is also the Local International Party at Holmes Place Jelmoli from 2pm – midnight. CHF 20 entry which includes 2 drinks and canapés .

Lots to do and let’s hope you can fit at least some of it  in. Certainly not a weekend to get bored!

Zurich Multimobil 2012 – Zurich goes green

You’ve probably seen the posters plastered all over Zurich this week – but what exactly is  “Zurich Multimobil”? It’s a series of over 70 activities taking place in Zurich from the 19th – 23rd September to show how mobile you can be in Zurich without needing a car.

The city of Zurich is highlighing these days of action as part of its contribution to “European Mobility Week” and to address the following questions:
Can you live in Zurich without a car?
What happens when there is no more oil?
How fast and easy is an E-bike to use?
All sorts of ideas and suggestions are on hand to look at ways of making Zurich more enviromentally friendly and Multimobil hopes to make you think about the part you can play. There are free bike tours with music and entertainment as well as free bike hire with Zuri Rollt, information about e-bikes and help for pedestrians an commuters alike. And please note that the centre of Zurich will be closed to cars all day Saturday 23rd September. For more information please click here.
