If you’re a big chocolate fan this is THE chocolate event to go to in Zurich.  Not only will you find all the newest and latest information about chocolate, the latest chocolate creations and innovations, as well as firm choccie favourites, but each day there will be a chocolate fashion show at 5pm – yes, really!  The models will be wearing clothes and designs made up of chocolate.  Quite a high risk strategy you may think, especially under the hot stage lights – and when you see the designs themselves you are sure to be even more impressed.

11. FESPO – travel and holiday fair continues and concludes on Sunday 3rd February at the Messe in Oerlikon in Zurich. It is open from 10am till 6pm and tickets cost CHF 14 but you can get  reduced entry of just CHF 8 by showing a valid public transport ticket. What’s On In and Around Zurich this coming week

The forecast looks set for a fabulous time to go skiing and snowboarding in the mountains!  The snow is great following the recent snow showers and the sun looks set to shine.

So where are you heading?  Klosters the resort with royal connections where you can recline in a deckchair by the palm trees and catch the rays, Davos where you can take a dip in a hot tub perched right in the snow after a hard day’s skiing or hard day’s networking at the World Economic Forum – or perhaps Flims/Laax where you can show off your latest snowboarding tricks at the snow park? Or why not explore one of the closer resorts like Atzmaennig, Hoch Ybrig, Pizol or Flumserberg?  If you want to check the conditions in nearby resorts take a look at our Practical Info page under Skiing.

Another possibility is the St.Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow which is on till this Sunday 27th January. This event is the world’s most prestigious Winter polo tournament – so if you’ve not been to one before, this is a great one to experience. It all takes place on the frozen lake there – lots of fun, excitement and colour! Click here for our previous post.

Following his Swiss premiere in November 2012 which was completley sold out, tenor John Thade is now back in Zurich for two concerts. The first takes place on the 9th February and the second on 9th March 2013 at the Jecklin Forum in Rämistrasse 30, 8001 Zurich. Both concerts start at 4pm , with the doors opening at 3.30pm. The musical repertoire of this American born singer who grew up in St.Gallen but now lives in Zurich, ranges from Viennese operettas to classic Broadway songs and he projects a great on stage presence as he intermixes his music with entertaining anecdotes. If this isn’t your cup of tea and you’re looking for something quirky and different why not pop along to the Migros Museum in Zurich and check out a “VideoInstallation” exhibition by the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson called “The Visitors”?

Set in a mansion in upstate Manhattan it depicts the artist, his friends, and residents performing a “feminine nihilistic gospel song” with various musical instruments being played in different rooms. “The Visitors” is an act of homage to friendship—and also, to the Swedish pop band ABBA. If you’re interested you need to be quick as it finishes on Sunday 27th January. Art and Culture in Zurich – the Kunsthaus, Helmhaus, AB Gallery and more…

The Kunsthaus

Everyone knows that the Kunsthaus in Zurich houses a fabulous art collection. At the moment current exhibitions include Paul Gaugin “The Prints”, which has been extended to 27th January, so you still have an opportunity to view it if you haven’t already. There is also an exhibition of work by Ferdinand Hodler, a Swiss painter from the late19th early 20th Century, which has just opened and will continue till 17th March. “Giacometti, The Donations” exhibition is also on until 17th February. The Kunsthaus is currently undergoing an extension designed by David Chipperfield Architects, which is due to be completed in 2017, allowing it the space to exhibit lots more work.

Entry to the Kunsthaus is CHF 18 for adults and CHF 12 for concessions but it’s good to note that under 16s are admitted free of charge and as we’ve mentioned previously, there is free entry for everyone on Wednesdays. The Kunsthaus is open Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday from 10am to 6 pm and Wednesday to Friday 10 am–8 pm. It is closed on Mondays.

The Helmhaus Museum

The Helmhaus Museum in Zurich shows a lot of contemporary art, usually by Swiss artists. The current exhibition is entitled “Nach dem Spiel ist vor dem Spiel” (After the game is before the game) and runs till the 27th January featuring work from the following artists: Anna Maria Bauer, Frank Bischof, Gabi Deutsch, Mark Divo, Cris Faria, Stella Glitter, Florence Jung, Björn Magnusson, Asia Andrzejka Naveen, PARK (Clarissa Herbst, Mario Marchisella, Dominique Rust, Michael Wolf), David Siepert. Entrance is free and the exhibition is open 10am – 6pm Tuesday to Sunday with late Thursdays till 8pm. Shahriar Ahmadi at the AB Gallery 6th February – 16th March

A selection of paintings by the Iranian artist Shahriar Ahmadi will be showcased at an exhibition at the AB Gallery in Zurich from the 6th February to 16th March. Ahmadi’s works often feature bold vibrant colours and are inspired by his Persian and historical heritage.  Works from his latest collection Kiss will be on display at the exhibition.

Joanne Finnegan Mountain Paintings 2nd February – 30th March

St Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow and World Economic Forum Davos

This week is a busy one in the mountains outside Zurich. If you fancy heading out of town there are two big international events on this week.

St.Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 24th – 27th January

Why not make the journey to St Moritz to experience the glamour and excitement of a world class polo tournament? From the 24th – 27th January there will be speed, excitement and colour on the frozen lake in St Moritz for the “St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow”. This event is the world’s most prestigious Winter polo tournament – so if you’ve not been to one before, this is a great one to experience.

The highlight of the tournament is the final taking place on Sunday 27th January after four teams have battled it out for the coveted World Cup trophy. Since the Snow Polo Tournament in Klosters was cancelled this year you may like to take the scenic journey from Zurich to St Moritz for this spectacular event. Watching polo on a frozen lake, 1,800 metres above sea level, surrounded by snow capped mountains in a fabulous ski resort is a truly unique experience. For more information read here.

The World Econmic Forum Davos 2013 23rd – 27th January

The World Economic Forum is taking place this week in Davos / Klosters. This is a meeting of the foremost global business, political and intellectual communities and other leaders of society who are committed to improving the state of the world. Issues such as HIV/AIDS treatment, water supply and fostering dialoque between Islam and the West will all be on the agenda.

The Event and Wedding Fair or Fest- und Hochzeitsmesse Zürich

Oerlikon is a popular location for concerts, exhibitions and events and just this weekend Zurich’s “Fest- und Hochzeitmesse” or Event and Wedding Fair takes place at the Messe by the Hallenstadion.

The Fair is on 12th and 13th January from 10am – 6pm each day.  In fact it’s not just aimed at those who are getting married. Whether you’re planning a wedding or indeed a grand party or event, or just want to go along for some inspiration, there is bound to be lots on offer to whet your appetite.

As well as fashion shows featuring the latest trends there are also talks on everything from flowers and accessories to holiday and honeymoon destinations and lots more.  In addition information and advice is on hand from hundreds of retailers who will be willing to help you with your plans. Visit to Photo13 at the Maag Halle in Zurich

There are two more days left to visit Photo13 in Zurich so if you haven’t been already, there’s still time this Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th January from 11am – 8pm.

As well as viewing some amazing photography there are also inspirational lectures available to attend given by world renowned photographers such as Steve McCurry, who took the iconic photograph of the “Afghan Girl” with the beautiful green eyes, which featured on the cover of the National Geographic magazine back in 1985 and has since become world famous. Steve McCurry will be speaking on Tuesday at 8pm after the exhibition has closed and is sure to be an enthralling speaker.

We went on Friday and not only had the chance to see some sensational photography by Swiss photographers exhibiting at Photo13 such as Morgan Schmid, Oliver Look, Nicholas Zanvi and many more, but also to talk to them about the techniques they used to create their photos and what inspires them.

Mercedes CSI Show Jumping “Golden Moments” at Hallenstadion 25th – 27th January

The Mercedes-CSI horse show is celebrating their 25th Jubilee at the Hallenstadion from 25th – 27th January with an event entitled “Golden Moments”.

The show promises a unique blend of elite sport and entertainment with a diverse program and a professional show. It also features the CSI “expo” or exhibition, with lots of attractions for the whole family. If you’re interested in learning more about the type of entertainment on offer check out this video.
