The Week Ahead in Zurich

It’s a busy week ahead for many people with Thanksgiving next Thursday and before you know it, it will be full steam ahead towards Christmas.  Here are a few ideas for the next couple of weeks in and around Zurich:

The Schoggi Tram Saturday 17th November

Schoggi tram Zurich, Chocolae Tram Zurich, Confiserie Honold

No need for translation here – the Schoggi Tram is the “Chocolate Tram” which has been doing a special run this week in Zurich. Sadly, Saturday 17th is the last day when the chocolate tram from Confiserie Honold wends its way through the city.

For just CHF 5 you get a hot chocolate, a piece of Almond Cake and a praline! You can buy your ticket at Bellevue stop or at Rennweg as you alight (no pre-booking). The chocolate tram runs from Bellevue at 13:30 / 14:00 / 14:30 / 15:00 / 15:30 / 16:00  (and in the other direction 15 minutes later) limited capacity. Enjoy!

The First International Arabic Film Festival in Zurich 16th – 25th November

International Arabic Film Festival Zurich

After the Zurich International Film Festival in October, now for the first time, Zurich plays host to the International Arabic Film Festival. The festival is running for 10 days from the 16th November till the 25th November. The films are running at the Filmpodium. For more information, the programme and to buy tickets.

Now is the time of year that all the circuses come to town:

Salto Natale Circus is in Zurich from 21st November to 2nd January. The venue is at  Zurich Kloten. For further information.

Conelli Circus is in the centre of town at Bauschänzli from 22nd November to 6th January  For further information. 

The Singing Christmas Tree in Werdmühleplatz just off Bahnhofstrasse is an institution in Zurich and if you haven’t seen it before then don’t miss it this year.  Christmas carols are sung by children all lined up in the formation of a Christmas Tree.  Why not go along and watch with a warming glass of Gluhwein! Blickgang Exhibition 23rd, 24th and 25th November

Blickfang Zurich 2012

Blickfang is the International design exhibition for fashion, interiors and jewellery and the good news is that it is coming to the Kongresshaus in Zurich on the 23rd – 25th November.  If you have never visited it before, then now is your opportunity! There is plenty of innovation, inspiration and plenty of things to look at and buy.  There is even day care provided for children from 12 noon and 6pm – so the kids can come too! Tickets are CHF 23. Something to put in your diary! Blickfang is the International design exhibition for fashion, interiors and jewellery and the good news is that it is coming to the Kongresshaus in Zurich on the 23rd – 25th November.  If you have never visited it before, then now is your opportunity! Räbeliechtliumzug in Richterswil Saturday 10th November

Raeblilichumzug Richterswil

Don’t miss the Räbeliechtliumzug in Richterswil this Saturday 10th November.  Not only is it the biggest in Europe, but is it also the most spectacular with the carved turnips illuminated by candles twinkling like hundred of little stars. The event istself take place in Richterswil with over 10’000 carved turnips and when the lights are turned off the village looks like  something out of a fairytale. The program is as follows:

  • from 3 pm Marketstalls sell decorated turnips for you to buy in Poststrasse
  • from 4 pm Concerts at Wisshusplatz and in Poststrasse
  • from 4 pm  Food and drink at Wisshusplatz
  • 6.25 pm  All the lights in the centre of the vilage are turned off
  • 6.30 pm  The Räbeliechtli-Umzug (procession) begins
  • 8.00 pm  End of the Umzug and the lights go back on
    Badges are on sale for CHF 8 and Pins for CHF 15 and if possible try to buy these as soon as you arrive.

Slow Food Market: Next week from the 9th – 11th November there is the Slow Food Market at the Messe in Oerlikon.  A not-to-miss event for all foodies and gourmets! This event focuses on the provenance of high quality food  – what we eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how the food we choose impacts the rest of the world.The antithesis of fast food embodied by its logo of the snail. Zurich Kunst 12: KUNST 12 ZÜRICH is a contemporary visual art fair showcasing 80 international galleries. Over the past 17 years this art fair has grown into an important meeting point for collectors, gallery owners, curators, artists and art-lovers.

The fair’s visitors are accustomed to international high quality and cutting-edge art as Zurich is an already established hot-spot in the art world. Alongside traditional programmes of modern and contemporary art, there are also booths promoting the latest generation of new galleries. Most recently, the fair introduced the ZKB Art Award to provide a platform for galleries and young aspiring artists.  From 8th – 11th November more than 20’000 visitors are expected to transform the 8000 m² former factory building into a vibrant art centre. Year after year, more than 10’000 film addicts flock to the Casinotheater and Theater Winterthur. Mercedes Benz Fashion Days: Mercedes Benz Fashion Days Zurich is where national and international designers such as Roberto Cavalli, Julien Macdonald, Missoni, Alexander Wang and many more show their collections and it takes place from 7th – 10th November at Schiffbau in Zurich. Halloween Week in Zurich – lots of events, some spooky, some not!

Charity Event: On Thursday 1st there is a charity screening at 7pm of a film by photo journalist Mimi Chakarova raising awareness about sex trafficking from Eastern Europe to Western Europe. 6 Things to do in Zurich this Weekend!

Lots going on this weekend in and around Zurich and it looks like it will be a good one whether it snows or not. A few things to keep you busy:

1. Open Day (Tag der Offenen Tur) at Zurich Kunsthaus – the gallery is open to everyone for free and lots of special activities including music, tours, competitions etc will be laid on to entertain you and please scroll down to our previous post on this topic for more information. 2. Continuing with the “art theme” there is also the exhibition of young Swiss artists in Winterthur jungkunst.ch which looks like a great occasion to view aspiring Swiss artists in a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy, music, shopping and food and drink. Love this picture by Alain Poussot:

3. Jelmoli Style Days continue with a Family Day in the children’s department with special offers, family photo shoots, a special family breakfast in the newly opened Sopra restaurant and 10% discount on many items across the whole store.

4. On Saturday evening there will be an “apocalyptic evening of fun and food” with a reading in English by Justin Cronin, author of “The Twelve” at Orell Fuessli bookstore at 8:00 p.m. Entrance free. 6. And if you’re feeling thirsty why not taste some wine at the Coop Weinmesse at the Schuetzenhaus in Albisguetli.  It’s closed on Sunday but it is open on Saturday 27th from 2pm – 10pm. This coming Saturday 27th October is a special day at the Kunsthaus in Zurich as they are having an open day for which they are laying on a special programme featuring particular exhibits, guided tours throughout the building, previews of the new extension, music, readings and quizzes and lots more! You can even take a peek behind the scenes of the gallery itself. What’s more – entrance is free!   Don’t miss a great day out for the whole family!

36th Zuercher Silvesterlauf – join the Zurich City Run on 16th December!

The 36th “Silvesterlauf” takes place in Zurich on the 16th December.  You can either register online via www.datasport.ch or you can email info@silvesterlauf.ch and request an “Einzahlungsschein” for payment.  Registration via Einzahunsschein closes on 1st December and online on the 9th December – so you still have time to both get in condition and to register.

There are all sorts of categories you can register in – for example, father and child, families, mother and child, “I’m fit”, “Run for Fun” etc, etc!  So find one that suits you and enjoy the run through Zurich. For more information (in German) click here.

What’s On this Weekend in Zurich – 13th and 14th October

There’s plenty on this weekend in and around Zurich. If you’re an art afficianado or perhaps you are even thinking of starting your own collection, the Art International Festival at Kongresshaus, near Burkliplatz is on this weekend and is open from 11am – 8pm both Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th. Amongst many of the artists showing is Elena Bardina, see photo below.

If you favour going just outside Zurich why not visit the Jucker Pumpkin Farm in Seegraben to admire their amazing “Olympic Display” and giant pumpkins. Earlier this week in the Swiss Pumpkin Championship competition (see photos) Beni Meier’s gigantic pumpkin set a new European record weighing 768.5 kg on the scales! This pumpkin is competing in the European Championships on Sunday, October 14 in Ludwigsburg in Germany, but the other giant pumpkins will still be on display until 4th November. The Juckerfarm is open both Saturday and Sunday and you can even try out some of the seasonal pumpkin delicacies. Their pumpkin soup is delicious!

The Zurich Bierfest is on at Zurich Hauptbahnof until Saturday 13th October with plenty of beer a fun atmosphere.  It’s advisable to make reservations if you can but there are sometimes seats availble if you’re passing by.  For more information and to make a booking click here. Zurich Oktoberfest at Bauschaenzli began yesterday and promises to be one big party. Tickets went on sale for this event back in May and sold out weeks ago but if you’re prepared to queue there is seating reserved for passers by, so that you too can experience this unique event. For more information click here.

Then a little further afield there is the Olma Agricultural Show in St Gallen which continues until the 21st October and in Geneva the Expat-Expo takes place on Sunday 14th.

And looking ahead  a couple of weeks, on Saturday 3rd November there is The Long Night of the Hotel Bars from 9pm – 3am. Get transported from one hotel bar to another around Zurich and listen to different live music and sample different atmospheres in each location. Hotels participating include the Hotel Storchen, The Claridge Hotel, the Renaissance and the Hotel Ascot.  A fun evening!
