Book Signing with JJ Marsh and Sunday Shopping in Zurich

The British author JJ Marsh (also known as Jill Prewett) was one of the three female entrepreneurs delivering an inspirational talk at the Powerhouse Event in Zurich on Tuesday and on Sunday 2nd December she will be at Orell Fuessli between 4pm and 5.30pm signing copies of her latest novel “Raw Material”, a crime thriller, which is set all over the UK from deserted Pembrokeshire beaches, through to the shadowy underpasses of North London and in to the remote Irish countryside. Jill’s first novel, “Behind Closed Doors”, based in Zurich, was the first novel in this detective series and both books would make ideal Christmas Presents.

Why not pop over to Orell Fuessli this Sunday to meet the author in person and to pick up a signed copy – and how about some Christmas shopping at the same time?  Don’t forget this Sunday is one of the Special Shopping Sundays in Zurich where the shops will be open from 11am – for more information on Sunday Shopping click here.

*** Prize Draw **** We have a signed copy of each book up for grabs – the draw will take place on Sunday 8th December – simply show your support for our Facebook page or post to enter.

NewInZurich Guide to Christmas Markets Part 1 Switzerland

Christmas Market Zurich

There’s nothing quite like visiting a Christmas market with a cup of hot Gluhwein in your hand as you explore the goods and wares of the market holders, sample a few goodies and get some inspiration for Christmas presents and turn your sights to Christmas.

Zurich itself has three main Christmas markets –  one with the glittering 15m high Swarovski Christmas Tree, in Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station, another in Hirschenplatz in the Niederdorf, the old town, and yet one more in Bellevue, just near the Opera.  A little further along Lake Zurich is the Rapperswil Christmas Market. Each one has it’s own personality and specialities.

Here are the dates for the main Christmas Markets in Switzerland:

Zurich Hauptbahnhof November 22nd – December 24th

Zurich Niederdorf 7th – 23rd December

Zurich Bellevue 22nd November – 24th December

Rapperswil 14th – 23rd December (closed on 17th December)

Basel November 22nd to December 23rd

Baden December 8th and December 12th

Berne 1st – 24th December

Biel 6th – 24th December

Bremgarten – 6th – 9th December

Ensiedeln 1st to 9th December

Lucerne November 23rd to December 23rd

Montreux November 23rd to December 24th

Lausanne November 23rd to December 24th

Morges – 5th – 9th December

Winterthur – 4th – 23rd December

Later this week we will post Part II featuring Christmas Markets over the border in France, Germany and Austria.

This information was based on NewInZurich’s “Snowtime” talk for schools, companies, families and individuals.  If you are interested in knowing more about what is on in Zurich in the Winter please email newinzurich@gmail.com for more information.

The Märlitram rides again in Zurich

Märlitram, Zurich

The Märlitram resumes its Chrismas rides from today, 26th November. Between 1.35pm and 7pm children between the ages of 4 and 10 years old can embark on a fun-filled 25 minute journey around Zurich driven by none other than Father Christmas!  If that wasn’t enough, Santa is ably assisted by a team of angels as the little passengers travel to Limmatquai and Central, along Bahnhofstrasse and back to Bellevue.

Tickets cost CHF 8.00 per ride and need to be purchased not at Bellevue, but in the children’s department on the first floor at Jelmoli. The Märlitrams run until the 23rd December. Sadly, adults are not allowed to join in the fun on board!

Blickfang 2012 Zurich – some views

If you haven’t made it to Blickfang yet, the Exhibition is on for one more day on Sunday 25th from 11am – 7pm at Kongresshaus opposite Burkliplatz.  Great for ideas and inspiration! Here are some photos to give you an overview:

If you’re going into Zurich anyway, don’t forget that the “Samichlaus Parade in Bahnhofstrasse is on today, Sunday 25th, too. It takes place around 5pm starting off near Globus. Schmutzli will be there too giving out treats and snacks!

For more ideas on what to do this weekend check out our last post by either scrolling down or by visiting our home page.

This Weekend in Zurich – Christmas is on the way!

There is plenty to do this weekend in Zurich.  If you’re in need of some artistic inspiration don’t miss the Blickfang exhibition at Kongresshaus which is running on both Saturday and Sunday. As well as plenty of ideas for the home and fashion it’s also great for present ideas too! Scroll down to see our earlier post for full details on opening hours, tickets etc.  Bring the kids along as they even offer child care too!

If you missed the Christmas lights going on in Bahnhofstrasse, (Zurich’s main shopping street and incidentally, the world’s fifth-most expensive retail street), on Thursday,  why not go and admire them this weekend?  This year’s version of lights are called “Lucy”, consisting of 1,550 “diamonds” made from light refracting crystal. Over the years there have been a variety of different patterns and types deployed since Christmas lights first were first introduced to Bahnhofstrasse in 1971 and these “eco” lights, use  50% less electricity than the previous design.  They are also a tad more subtle than London’s Oxford and Regent Street lights (which this year bizarrely feature a bottle of marmite as part of the display!), …. it just all means that Christmas is on the way!

Singing Christmas Tree, ©NewInZurich

On Saturday 24th the first performances of the “Singing Christmas Tree” will take place in Werdmuhleplatz, just off Bahnhofstrasse.  Featuring school children dressed in red and green, singing carols in the formation of a “human Christmas Tree”, this is something not to be missed.  The concerts take place at the weekend at 2.30pm, 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm.  During the week the performances are at 5.30pm and 6.30pm and today 24th November the performances are just at 5.40pm and 6.30pm. They continue until the 23rd December.

On Sunday 25th there is the Samichlaus” Christmas Procession” in Zurich. Santa Claus, known locally as Samichlaus, and his assistant «Schmutzli»  hand out snacks and treats as they parade along Bahnhofstrasse. The procession starts around 5pm in Usteristrasse between Globus and Bahnhofstrasse.

And if you fancy sampling a Gluhwein or two why not head down to Zurich Hauptbahnof where the annual Christkindlmarkt takes places from now until the 24th December.  With stalls selling everything from jewellery, knitwear, pashminas, candles, as well as amazing cheeses and meats and you can even have your lunch or supper there as there is also raclette and bratwurst on offer! The crowning glory of the market is as always the magnificent Swarovski Christmas tree standing 15m high and glistening with over 7,000 crystals. Open daily till the 24th December from 11am – 9pm and on Thursday, Fridays and Saturday till 10pm.

There is a smaller Christmas Market in Bellevue near the Opera from 24th November to 24th December.  Once again there is Gluhwein, raclette, bratwurst, marroni and more. It’s best seen when it gets dark when all the fairy lights show up beautifully against the late afternoon and evening skies. It open daily at 12 (on Saturdays at 11) and finishes at 8pm on Saturdays, 6pm on Sundays and 9pm on weekdays.

Voca People

Or why not try something totally different and go to a show?  Voca People are performing at the Maag Halle just off Hardbruecke and going by the motto of “life is music and music is life”, this troupe of five men and three women dressed all in white with bright red lips entertain their audiences through music and sound.  For more information and tickets see here.
